Received my Garmin 500 today!  http://www.cyclingtipsblog.com/2010/03/garmin-edge-500-review/  Going to see if I can get her hooked up and running today!  Rode another 60 miles yesterday in beautiful weather!
Went for a little longer ride today.  Wind not as bad!  Started at N 21st and Maize in Wichita and headed west on 21st to highway 251, then turned south and went through Cheney, Ks and on further to 71st st South.  We then turned east and worked our way around Lake Afton, Goddard and back to Wichita.  Had to deal with a flat today though.  Starting to get that repair down flat….haha!  Hoping to get my garmin in the next few days!  WOOT!
Did a shorter 45 miler but…..AUGH!!!  Winds were 25, gusting to 45!   Now THAT was a workout!  Rode from Wichita, Ks to Bentley, Ks then turned west and went to Mount Hope, Ks, then turned south to Garden Plain, Ks, then through Goddard, Ks back to 21st and Maize in Wichita!  We had six riders so while it was hard work, it was fun too!
AND ANOTHER 60 miler with 20-30 mph winds this time!  CRAZY!  Another key is stretching!  Recommendations to stretch or not stretch change from year to year and from expert to expert. Stretching has been promoted for years as an essential part of a fitness program as a way to decrease the risk of injury, prevent soreness and improve performance. While researchers continue to look at the benefits and pitfalls of stretching, there is still limited (and conflicting) evidence to sort out these opinions. Some research suggests that stretching doesn’t prevent muscle soreness after exercise. Researchers Robert Herbert, Ph.D., and Marcos de Noronha, Ph.D. of the University of Sydney conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 previously published studies of stretching either before or after athletic activity. They concluded that stretching before exercise doesn’t prevent post-exercise muscle soreness. They also found little support for the theory that stretching immediately before exercise can prevent either overuse or acutesports injuries. Much of this confusion comes from a misinterpretation of research on warm up. These studies found that warming by itself has no effect on range of motion, but that when the warm up is followed by stretching there is an increase in range of motion. Many people misinterpreted this finding to mean that stretching before exercise prevents injuries, even though the clinical research suggests otherwise. A better interpretation is that warm up prevents injury, whereas stretching has no effect on injury. If injury prevention is the primary objective the evidence suggests that athletes should limit the stretching before exercise and increase the warm up time. Studies do support that range of motion can be increased by a single fifteen to thirty second stretch for each muscle group per day. However, some people require a longer duration or more repetitions. Research also supports the idea that the optimal duration and frequency for stretching may vary by muscle group. The long-term effects of stretching on range of motion show that after six weeks, those who stretch for 30 seconds per muscle each day increased their range of motion much more than those who stretched 15 seconds per muscle each day. No additional increase was seen in the group that stretched for 60 seconds. Another 6 week study conducted found that one hamstring stretch of 30 seconds each day produced the same results as three stretches of 30 seconds.
WOW!  My tired is tired!  I just finished a 60 miler!  The key, as I am learning, is keeping hydrated and nourished!
Still working hard towards riding 100 miles!  Did another 50 miler and another 35 miler!  Did you know that I will burn nearly 5000 calories on a 50 miler?  WOW!  AND I thought Kansas was flat….well…riding a bike, I’m finding out it isn’t! And the wind, well, that is something else!
Off to a great start!  I have 3 x 50 mile rides and a 34 mile ride under my belt!  Down to 1 flat in 4 rides and NO CRASHES!  Still waiting on my Garmin.  As soon as I get it, I will be able to post more info on my rides!  It has been in the mid 100′s just about all summer here in Kansas!  Still maintaining my weight loss!  Looking forward to a couple of trips coming up….Orlando and Washington DC!
After 6 flats and 5 rides and 5 falls, venturing out again this morning!  Longest ride so far was 25 miles.  Lets hope we figured out why I was having flats!
Two spin classes today along with some weights and some ab work!  Bike is in town!  WOOHOO!  May go for a ride tomorrow!  Here is a cool picture!  Anyone know these folks?
Walked 7 miles this morning!  2 x 60 minute spin classes this weekend and weight trained for an hour!  Really looking forward to getting the bike here later this week so I can begin riding outdoors!  The weather is cooling off too!  SWEET!  Our long streak of 100+ days look to be coming to an end!  Tried the vanilla pre-made shake and found it very good too!  I hope they come out with a strawberry version!
Bike is on it’s way finally!  Should arrive on the 10th then put back together soon after that!    May get to start some outdoor training really soon!  Here is a link to the bike I will be riding.  Thanks for Ironman.com for fitting me into this bike!   http://www.bianchiusa.com/bikes/born-for-performance/sempre/sempre-ultegra/
Uncle is doing better!  May be able to go home soon!  Today I begin to train for my cycling experience!  I hope to have my bike in 7 – 10 days but in the meantime will use this time for some weights and endurance exercises.  Starting with a 5.3 mile walk to the gym, workout
with weights and a little biking, followed with another 5.3 mile walk home.  Sound good?
Just spent a week in Tampa but it wasn’t all for fun.  My uncle was at Moffitt Cancer Center and is dealing with a bad case and it doesn’t look good.  I have started to hit spin class again and I am looking forward to getting my bike so I can begin working on the miles outdoors!  I think I will be doing a number of biking events (40-ish) over the next 18 months to build up my endurance for a trek across the US.  I will be 50 years old at that time!  I keep hearing that I will be gaining all my weight back soon but guess what……it ain’t happening!  Medi-Weightloss Clinics has given me a plan and taught me how to live this new lifestyle and I want to pass it on to everyone that will listen and especially our children!  STAY STRONG!
Hey everyone!  Getting ready to head out to Tampa!  Getting fitted for a touring bike thanks to Ironman360.com.  In August I will begin my training for a bike across America event to raise awareness of childhood obesity!  The great folks at Medi-Weightloss Clinics recognizes that childhood obesity is an epidemic that needs urgent attention and are willing to sponser me as I try to raise awareness of this problem!
Here is a useful tool for those that like to track how many calories they burn exercising!  It also has many other useful tools you may like to check out! http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.php
Exercise, tied to the Medi-Weightloss Clinics physician supervised weightloss program, is the best combo to help you reach your fitness goals!
Had a very good 4th of July followed by a very hot two weeks!  My uncle is dealing with cancer and so I have been a bit distracted!  Still healing from surgery.  I still have two spots that are “leaking” but everything else is healing very well!  I stated walking and some eliptical work.  Hope to start pedaling very soon!  Of the three surgeries I had to remove loose skin (tummy tuck, pec lift, and inner thigh), the last one has been the toughest for me!
Hope everyone is having a safe 4th of July weekend!  I started walking yesterday!  4.5 miles!  Got 5 in today!  Feels good to be back at it a bit!  Hopefully doc will release me to full workouts in 2 weeks!  If you haven’t tried the new protein bars…you have GOT to try them!  They are the BOMB!  Peanut Butter Temptation https://www.mediweightlossclinics.com/weight-loss-products/Protein-Bar-Peanut-Butter-Temptation-p51.html You can order them online too! I am starting to get pumped up to start my bike training!  And for what a better cause than for the kids of America!  Stay tuned for further details!   Speaking of America, let me say something you don’t seem to hear often enough anymore that is in a song we all know…”God bless America,  Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.”
Starting to heal, finally!  Sierra Scott did a wonderful piece on my story!  Check it out here!  http://www.youtube.com/user/GoodwithSierraScott
Now, if I can just stop draining in the one spot by my knee!  Can’t wait to get back into the swing of things!
Well, I got the staples pulled out on Wednesday but had to go back in Thursday for some stitches.  Took it REAL easy Friday and today!  Lotsa resting and sleeping!  This IS taking a bit longer then I thought! :(
Doing fine in recovery from surgery!  Although yesterday I endured something that wasn’t pleasant!  I had a tube in my thigh that went in just above the knee and went up to my groin to help keep things drained out to stop swelling.  On both legs!   Well they were pulled out yesterday….yea I winced…..heck  I said ouchy several times!  Now, I’m looking forward to tomorrows pulling of the staples!  Pray for me! :)   The good news is that my thighs went from 35″ to 27″!  AWESOME!  Will post a pic soon showing results!
I had surgery last Wednesday to get rid of the excess skin on my upper thighs!  I’m feeling pretty good today!  The legs are looking pretty good now!  I have to take it easy for a bit but looking forward to getting back into the swing of things soon!  Did you see that Medi-Weightloss Clinics has a new protein bar?   Peanut Butter Temptation https://www.mediweightlossclinics.com/weight-loss-products/Protein-Bar-Peanut-Butter-Temptation-p51.html  YUMMY!
I got to do something a couple of days ago that I never would have been able too if I hadn’t lost the 300 pounds following my Medi-Weightloss Clinics plan! I got to experience 5g’s in a Stearman doing some acrobatics (loop, hammerhead, and half clover) and yes, we buzzed the tower! :) That’s me in front!  I even got to fly a bit!
A local Chicago newspaper ran an interview with me although it wasn’t entirely acurate.  I will be doing a leg surgery (to get rid of loose skin on my upper thighs) in 2 weeks (June 8th) and will begin training after I have healed!  Here is the link! http://www.mysuburbanlife.com/hinsdale/features/x1058161385/Formerly-obese-man-biking-across-America-to-begin-training-in-Hinsdale  I hope I can touch a few lives in the Chicago area and inspire them to try Medi-Weightloss Clinics (the one that works!).
The clinic in the Chicago area is in Hinsdale….

534 Chestnut Street
Suite 110
Hinsdale, IL 60521

Off I go for my leg surgery consult!  Time to take the loose skin off my upper thighs!  June 8th is still the date! Will update this as soon as I get back!
YES!  We are a go for June 8th!  A Lot of skin will be removed!
Had a great newspaper interview on Friday with a publication in Chicago!  We talked about my new goal in life, helping kids with obesity issues!  Next years bike ride plans are slowly coming together!  I have my docs appointment this week to look at my legs!  Going to get all the loose skin removed from them.  Then the hard part……NO exercise for 2 weeks, then light exercise for 4-6 weeks!  UGH!  Already getting the shakes! :)   Wish me luck!
Childhood Obeisity…The growing epidemic!

Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. The prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 to 11 years increased from 6.5% in 1980 to 19.6% in 2008. The prevalence of obesity among adolescents aged 12 to 19 years increased from 5.0% to 18.1%.  (http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/obesity/).  1 of 7 low-income, preschool-aged children is obese. County obesity rates are variable within states. Even states with the lowest prevalence of obesity have counties where many low-income children are obese and at risk for chronic disease. http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/childhood/data.html

How is childhood overweight and obesity measured?

Body mass index (BMI) is a measure used to determine childhood overweight and obesity. It is calculated using a child’s weight and height. BMI does not measure body fat directly, but it is a reasonable indicator of body fatness for most children and teens.

A child’s weight status is determined using an age- and sex-specific percentile for BMI rather than the BMI categories used for adults because children’s body composition varies as they age and varies between boys and girls.

CDC Growth Charts are used to determine the corresponding BMI-for-age and sex percentile. For children and adolescents (aged 2—19 years):

  • Overweight is defined as a BMI at or above the 85th percentile and lower than the 95th percentile for children of the same age and sex.1
  • Obesity is defined as a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for children of the same age and sex.1   http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/childhood/basics.html

Here is an interesting article explaining why it has become such a big problem! http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/childhood/basics.html

I hope all our mother’s had a great day yesterday!  I tried something new yesterday!  I took one of our chocolate Medi-Weightloss Clinics protein bar, split in half and put some fatfree cool whip on it and put it back together then put it in the freezer for an hour.   Mmmmmm  Yummy!  Welp!  It looks like June 8th I will be doing my leg surgery!  I have a LOT of loose skin on my upper legs.  Looking forward to it!  Something to think about…..take a second to look up a picture of something that represents your weightloss to this point!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week!  Stay tuned to a major announcement about an upcoming TV appearance by my wife and I in the next few weeks….national tv..!  I’m so excited!  Boot camp has been a blast and is VERY challenging!  LOVE IT!  Thanks C!
As most of you know, after running the half marathon last October, I have been wrestling with a decision of changing my next goal from running a full marathon to biking. Why?  Because all those years of being over 400 pounds caused the cartlidge in my knees to be very thin so the long runs are painful!  Anyway, does anyone have a good road bike just hanging around in their garage?  I’m looking for a good deal! ;) jbiggars1@cox.net
I love how the arms and chest are shaping up!  I’m now focused on finding that elusive 6-pack! I take 6 spin classes, 2 boot camp classes, 2 ab classes and weight train 3x a week now!  Had a cool thing happen to me last Friday!  I was standing next to my 19 and 21 year old boys and a nephew I hadn’t seen in years came up to us and said “Man, you have grown!  You guys are looking great!  Where’s your pops?”  Made my week!  The look on his face when I said “I AM the pops!” was priceless!  If you are a Medi-Weightloss Clinic patient, check out your stats on the Signature Patient Website!  Each time a patient logs on, during the month of March, they will be entered to win a prize valued at $250.**Limit one entry per day per patient!
I found a wonderful lasagna recipe that is low carb!  I used the Walden’s farm sauce so it was actually lower calories and carbs then what they post it as!  Try it, you will like it!  I am starting to like the challenge the boot camp is giving me although I am very sore this morning ;)   It is always good to mix-up your exercise routines to keep your body guessing!  This month Medi-Weightloss Clinics is promoting the importance of the Signature Patient Website, each time a patient logs on to the Signature Patient Website during the month of March, they will be entered to win a prize valued at $250.* *Limit one entry per day per patient.  Good luck everyone!
1 pound ground beef
2 tablespoons onion, chopped
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 cup spaghetti sauce
8 ounces cream cheese
1 egg
1/8 teaspoon pepper
10 ounces frozen chopped spinach, thawed & drained
4 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese (I used the kind in a can)

Brown the hamburger with the onion; drain off the fat. Mix in the garlic powder and spaghetti sauce; season to taste and heat until bubbly. Meanwhile, soften the cream cheese in a medium-size microwaveable bowl for about 40-60 seconds. Stir until creamy; beat in the egg and pepper with a spoon until well mixed. Blend in the spinach. Spread half of the meat mixture evenly in the bottom of a greased, 8 x 8″ glass baking pan. Spread the spinach mixture over the meat; top with the mozzarella, then the rest of the meat. It may not completely cover the top, but that’s ok. Sprinkle with the parmesan cheese. Bake at 350º about 30 minutes until hot and bubbly. Or, cover with plastic wrap and vent one corner then microwave on HIGH for 3 minutes; then reduce to MEDIUM and cook for another 7-10 minutes until hot and bubbly. Let stand 3 minutes before serving.

Makes 6-9 servings
Can be frozen

It’s feeling a bit springy outside this week!  Go figure!  Welcome to Kansas!  We never are bored when it comes to weather!  This week would be a great week to put on the walking shoes and get some miles in outside!  Walking is a great exercise anyone can do!  But first, always consult your doctor before starting an exercise program!  Then, get yourself a good pair of shoes!  Here is a link to an article by the MAYO clinic that gives you some guidelines when it comes to looking for a good walking shoe!  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/walking/HQ00885_D
Winter time blahs!
Holy cow!  Nearly 20 inches of snow in some areas around Wichita, Kansas!  We actually got somewhere close to 10 inches in my neighborhood (NW Wichita).  It was -17 this morning and that is not the windchill!  UGH!  It is 10 am now and it is -9 with a windchill of -28.  Take me away Calgon!  I did find a new exercise though!  Not the most enjoyable one out there but did you know that you could burn 455 calories shoveling snow in 1 hour?  Here is a cool little program I use to help me figure calories burned for an activity.  Hope you like it! http://www.fitday.com/webfit/exerciseinfopage.html
Hey, if anyone has a road bike they are just storing and not using, let me know!  I want to try some biking this spring/summer!  Thanks!
What a week!  Went from 70 degrees to blizzard and -20 windchill in a matter of a couple of days!  In this cold weather, I find it hard to make sure I get my fluids in!

Why Drinking Water Is Important for Weight Loss

There are many reasons why it is important to drink water, especially if you are dieting:

  • Initial weight loss is largely due to loss of water, and you need to drink an adequate amount of water in order to avoid dehydration.
  • The process of burning calories requires an adequate supply of water in order to function efficiently; dehydration slows down the fat-burning process.
  • Burning calories creates toxins (think of the exhaust coming out of your car), and water plays a vital role in flushing them out of your body.
  • Dehydration causes a reduction in blood volume; a reduction in blood volume causes a reduction in the supply of oxygen to your muscles; and a reduction in the supply of oxygen to your muscles can make you feel tired.
  • Water helps maintain muscle tone by assisting muscles in their ability to contract, and it lubricates your joints. Proper hydration can help reduce muscle and joint soreness when exercising.
  • A healthy (weight loss) diet includes a good amount of fiber. But while fiber is normally helpful to your digestive system, without adequate fluids it can cause constipation instead of helping to eliminate it.
  • Drinking water with a meal may make you feel full sooner and therefore satisfied eating less. Note, however, that drinking water alone may not have this effect. In order to feel satiated (not hungry), our bodies need bulk, calories and nutrients.

Do not worry that drinking water will give your body a bloated look. There are a number of causes of water retention, including consuming too much salt. But drinking water is not one of them.

It is possible to harm yourself by drinking too much water, but it takes quite an effort. Either through obsessive-compulsive behavior or extended athletic activity, drinking large amounts of water can dilute the electrolytes (sodium and potassium) in your blood to the point that it interferes with brain, heart and muscle function. Athletes compound the problem with the loss of sodium (salt) through sweating, but can drink electrolyte replacement drinks like Smart Water and Powerade Zero to help keep things in balance.

Tips on Drinking Water

    • Drinking other liquids also provides your body with a source of water, but note that diuretics cause your body to expel water. Diuretics include caffeinated drinks (coffee, tea and soda) and alcohol. When drinking diuretics, drink more water to compensate.

When drinking alcohol, drinking water along with it as well as before and afterward may eliminate a hangover headache and feeling of tiredness. The water is optional; driving is not.

  • When you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Try to avoid this situation by drinking in advance. Be especially careful when participating in activities where you won’t be able to stop to get caught up.
  • You’ve heard countless advertisements telling you what product to start your day with. We recommend a couple of glasses of water to rehydrate your body. No charge.
The question of sodium has come up so here are some interesting facts about it.  The Mayo clinic says:

Sodium: How much do you need?

According to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans:

  • Don’t exceed 2,300 mg of sodium a day if you’re a healthy adult.
  • Don’t exceed 1,500 mg of sodium a day if you have high blood pressure, kidney disease or diabetes; you are black; or you’re middle-aged or older.

Keep in mind that these are upper limits, and less is usually best, especially if you’re sensitive to the effects of sodium. If you aren’t sure how much sodium your diet should include, talk to your doctor.

I shoot for no more than 2,000 mg per day and really shoot for between 1,300 – 1,700 mg’s per day.  Here is a link to the American Heart Association article on sodium: http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4708

I put on my lab coat and did a little experiment of my own.  I have been hearing that sugar alcohols aren’t all what they are cracked up to be!  When you get too many of them, your body still looks at them like they are sugar.  I have heard of 3 ways you can look at the sugar alcohol carbs.  Initially, I heard you subtract all of them and fiber from total carbs to get net carbs of what your eating.  Then I heard it was half of them and fiber if over 10 grams. Here is an article from the ADA that says to always figure half of them  http://www.diabetes.org/food-and-fitness/food/what-can-i-eat/sugar-alcohols.html . I also heard that if you have too many, they can cause cravings.  Well, last Friday and Saturday I followed a pure protien diet with all my water and felt good.  Sunday morning about 11am I had 3 of the russell stovers sugar free turtles and ended up eating the last 3 by 3pm and couldn’t get rid of my hunger panges for the rest of the day!  Very interesting!
Good morning friends!  Thanks for all the feedback on the question concerning to run, or not to run! I think I will move forward with my decision to change to biking!  I agree that I must listen to my body and if it’s yelling at me to do something else, I had better listen! LOL!  Hey, If you want to try a very good, low calorie, low carb protien bar, try one of these Medi-Weightloss Clinics bars. I love them all!  https://www.mediweightlossclinics.com/weight-loss-products/

Had a friend bail on me that I was going to ask this question. I have lost 300 pounds, ran a 10k, and ran a half marathon. My next goal was the full marathon. BUT, my doctor said that the cartlidge in my knee is very thin. So, I’ve been thinking about switching to biking and maybe doing something like the Bike across… Kansas. “Man up and finish your goals” or “Why risk any further injury?”. Thoughts?

11/30/2010:  Have been crazy busy with all of the traveling (Tuscon, Az for a week after Las Vegas) and getting ready for my surgery tomorrow (12/1).  Going to have the loose skin removed from my chest area!  Have been really working on getting in the last bit of exercise before the big day.  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a good start on the Christmas holiday!   I gained a few pounds but on the fast track to taking them back off!  I still average 6 spin classes, 3 weight training sessions, and jog 3 times a week!  I am also starting work on a couple of books!   Stay tuned!    Shawna, my wife, has lost over 100 pounds and only has 20-30 pounds to reach goal!  We were told that the Today Show would have us back on as a couple when she reaches her goal!  I am taping a show for the local PBS (KPTS) affiliate that will be a highlight of my success!
In Vegas!  Already booted out of Ceasar’s Palace (maintenance issue’s with a bunch of rooms) but they put us up in the Westgate Tower’s at Planet Hollywood on their dime AND gave us $60!!  We are in a suite on the 55th floor overlooking the MGM Grand and New York, New York.  Looking forward to a fun filled day at the convention followed by a long night of sight-seeing.  Actually got in 3 miles this morning! Have a great day everyone!

Stress test on Monday came back that I had passed with flying colors!  WOOHOO!  Our Andover Medi-Weightloss Clinic support group had a great meeting last night!  We spent time talking about Thanksgiving recipes, exercise and the new Medi-Weightloss  Clinics interactive exercise program, cheating and dancing as a form of exercise.  I am talking to the local PBS station about a possible show about Medi-Weightloss Clinics and my story.  That should be fun!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN everyone!  Had a great time in New Orleans last week.  Spoke to a lot of good doctors and even a few prospective patients!  One was an ex-Oakland Raider who is going to be a new patient of Medi-Weightloss Clinic soon!  Looking forward to spending some time this week in Overland Park, Ks!  I willbe in town Wednesday and Thursday for the Grand Opening of our newest clinic!  In the mean time….watch out for all that scary candy out there!   ; )
Emotions….Stress….Closure…they all effect your weightloss goals.  I just had to help with an auction for my 94 year-old grandfather.  He finally decided it was time to sell the house he and grandmother were in since 1967 when they came to Wichita to work for Cessna after being a farmer/greenhouse owner all thier lives along with all of grandmothers collections of toothpick holders and chickens.  As he said “There will not be any more Christmas dinners here with the family”.  Yes, I’m human and I made some bad choices in food that day but I got right back on track the next day!  Check out the new article about me here..  http://www.kansas.com/2010/10/23/1554659/noodles-co-to-open-new-site-at.html and actually, I’ll be in New Orleans this Sunday – Thursday, Overland Park 11/3-4, Ceaser’s Palace in Vegas 11/9-11, and The Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa in Tuscon,Az 11/14-19. Looking forward to meeting a lot of good folks!
A look into my mind as a first time half marathon runner….
6am:  Yawn…Oh boy…the day of reckoning is here!  Shower, dress, lots of deoderant, eat a few eggs, take my suppliments, and drink a protien shake.
7am: Excitement and apprehension building as I hope my knee holds up from the mild strain from the 5k two weeks ago.  Just remember, slow and steady!
715am: Arrive at stadium and park a quarter mile away from start line.  Need to walk and stretch a little.
730am: Tension building even more but it is tempered as I run into friend after friend who will also be running either the half or full marathon.
745am:  I CAN DO THIS, I CAN DO THIS!  I find myself alone.  Gotta find the zone!
750am:  They are singing the anthem….oh boy…what am I doing!?!
755am:  This race is mine!
800am:  Off we go at a walk pace. So many people, not enough room.
803am: OK, I can jog now!  Remember….slow and steady!  11 Minute pace!  Man, there are a lot of people passing me!
806am:  boppin to some good tunes…where IS that first mile marker!?!
811am:  SWEET!  Pacing right on time!  1 mile down, 12.1 miles left!
816am:  HEY!  Just had a 50+ year old friend wave hi as he passed me!  I don’t care, he is an experienced runner.
822am:  OK, doing great!  Feeling good, knee holding up, relaxed!
831am:  Opps!  Playlist stopped!  gotta pull out player and restart it!  There we go!
833am:  Alright!  3 miles down and rock solid 11 minute pace!  Really beginning to feel pumped up!
844am:  4 miles down!  Now I’m beginning to pass some people as my pace continues to be consistant!
851am:  Wow!  What a hill!  Oh well, I was told to walk up steep hills but I feel pretty good…just keep running!
855am:  5 miles, 55 minutes…..11 minute pace continues!
906am:  6 miles down!  SWEET!  Halfway there!  HEY!  There is Jill!  WOOHOO!
908am:  OUCH!  Dang left knee!
920am:  Oh NO!  14 minute mile…OK…lets walk a bit to see if that will help.  I am a fast walker!
936am:  Man….16 minute mile?  Let’s try running again! Mile 8 DONE!
940am: Oh NO…my right ankle is starting to hurt!  Am I favoring my knee that much!?!
947am:  WOOT! Mile 9 is another 11 minute mile BUT my ankle really starting to hurt…Ok, lets walk again!
1003am: Mile 10 took me 16 minutes!  Ok, let’s try running again!
1008am:  OW! OW! OW!  My right calf just got REAL TIGHT!  Back to walking!
1023am: Mile 11 took me 20 minutes….UGH! I can barely walk!  I need to find somewhere to stretch!
1025am: AH!  The Vetern’s War Memorial!  Lay down…stretch, stretch, stretch!  Watch as racer after racer passes! Do I really want to finish this?
1030am: Gotta go!  Tried jogging…not happening.  Back to walking!
1043am: Pass mile marker 12!  Only 1.1 mile to go!  Still walking!
1046am:  A friend walks back to me after finishing her race and walks with me!  Thanks Betty!
1051am: Another friend (Bonnie) and her grand daughter’s cheer me on then challenge me to a race to the finish line.  I can’t pass on that and begin running.
1056am: DONE!  OMG! I did it!  My legs are shaking!
1100am: Congrats from a lot of good friends!  Who would have thought!  2 years ago I was 493 pounds, today I finished a half marathon!
1105am:  Gotta sit down!  I’m SO SORE, TIRED, WOW!  My aches have aches!
Goal #2 met, I have a year to get ready for goal #3 of running a marathon.  I sure hope my knee gets stronger or I may have to change it to a biking goal instead!
Doc says mild knee strain.  Going to go ahead and try it Sunday but will listen to body!
So, this morning I walked a mile and while my ankle feels better, my knee still is having an issue.  It looks like my half marathon try next Sunday is in dire straits.  I guess I should go see my Doc!  On a good note, I have dropped 13 pounds since cutting down on the sodium intake!  WOOT! : )
Well, well, well…..I have been maintaining for a couple of months now +/- 10 pounds. But my water weight has been increasing. I decided to renew my efforts of listing EVERYTHING (not just food) that enters my mouth and guess what I found! I have been drinking 4 powerade Zeros per day to get my 128 ozs of fluid in with electrolytes. Great right? Well, there are 4 servings in a bottle and in each serving there are 100mg of sodium. So, just in the drinks alone, I was consuming 1,600mg of sodium per day. My sodium count yesterday? 3,340mg The recommended amount is 2,400mg per day. Hmmmmmm..time to re-evaluate my drinks! Maybe just one after a work out! ; )  Back to Smart Waters!  Man!  Reading labels and keeping food logs seem to be a never ending chore!  Medi-Weightloss Clinics has come out with a new item that will help you lose weight!
The InterActive Exercise Program starts with the Activator. The Activator includes the following:
OK…Question for the die-hard runners! I have been training for the half marathon for 6 weeks now I have been acing somewhere in the 11-12 minute mile range. Just ran the Race for the Cure 5K. The pace was much faster! My first mile was 8 minutes, second was 9 when my knee twinged and I had to walk a half mile to… give it a break. Ended the 5k in 30:23. Is it a bad idea to intermix the two kind of races? Since I have a tendancy to have knee/hammy issues, should I wear some kind of brace on that knee? It is the same left knee/hammy that is having issues.
9/20/2010:  What a weekend!  Ran 6 miles Friday and a short 3 miler Sunday!  Only about 20 days from half marathon!  I am doing a 5k this Saturday for the Race for the Cure…http://www.komenmidks.org/ . I also did 2 spin classes and a yoga class.  Fatman Unleashed has a wonderful story on yoga here… http://www.fatmanunleashed.com/wanna-know-a-secret-do-yoga/ . I am using it to keep stretched out with all this running I’m doing now!  Flexability is a big plus for running!  I have been maintaining my weightloss so far but it is a day-to-day battle!  Medi-Weightloss Clinics is helping me fight this battle and 20 months into the struggle I am still winning!
9/16/10: Just followed up with another 8 miles yesterday!  I then went to spin class and listened to it hail!  AGH!!!  Luckily I had parked under a tree so I just see a few very minor dents (hard to see ones). Trying to get used to this new maintenance phase of my  Medi-Weightloss Clinics lifestyle!  I’m telling you….it’s harder than it looks!  Found a real interesting article by the American Heart Association that you may find interesting too!  Check out this link! http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3040451
9/10/10:  Just ran 8 miles in 1:31…NON-STOP!  The longest distance and time I have EVER ran!  Half marathon a month away!
09/09/2010:  Got a 3.7 mile in 37 minutes run in yesterday along with a good spin class.  This morning at 4am, got in my weight training!  Tomorrow, going to run 8 miles and another spin class!  OUCH!!!  ;)   My weight is staying pretty steady +/- 3 to 5 pounds.  I think I’m going to do the Medi-Weightloss Clinics Challenge starting tomorrow through next Friday.  Getting ready to do the Race for the cure ( http://ww5.komen.org/ ) on Saturday, September 25th, and the Wichita Prairie Fire Half Marathon ( http://www.prairiefiremarathon.com/ ) on Saturday, October 10th!  What did I do for the Labor Day weekend?  I went to KC for a few days.  Watched a Royal game on Friday (yea, they lost again!), went shopping, attended Irishfest, and enjoyed a great meal at Jasper’s with Dr. Mirabile (who just opened a new  Medi-Weightloss Clinics in Overland Park, Ks) on Saturday.  Went home Sunday and spent Monday weeding my 93 year-old grandfather’s garden and flower beds!  Now, doesn’t that sound like fun!; )  In case you missed it, here is a blog that has posted my story a few months ago and is one you might like to follow! http://aweightylife.blogspot.com/2010/02/day-38-amazing-weight-loss-story-jerome.html
On another note, I have found another wonderful blog to follow!  http://lynnsweigh.blogspot.com/ Lynn is blogging her life with all of the challenges of losing and maintaining her weight loss along with issues we all may face on a daily basis.  Her latest is a moving story about her dogs.  Be sure to check it out!
09/05/2010:  The interview went very well I think!  http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/shownotes/ Have been enjoying Kansas City this weekend!  Irishfest, shopping on the plaza, enjoying a wonderful low carb meal at Jasper’s Marco Polo Restaurant, a little casino time (glad we don’t do that very often!) ), and spending time with a beautiful birthday girl! Ah, Holiday weekends!  Hope everyone is enjoying a great Labor Day weekend!
TUNE in!  I am interviewed on a podcast by Jimmy Moore ( http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/ ) today (Friday 9/3/2010)!! It should show up after 4pm central time!  Here is an what he is promoting for it!
“We’re winding down our special “Week of Weight Loss Success 2″ and have just one more weight loss success story to share with you–and it’s a biggie: Jerome Biggars who lost an eye-popping 300 pounds and has quite the story to share. Don’t you dare miss this conversation to round out an outstanding week of inspirational weight loss success stories!”

Back in Kansas!  It’s only supposed to get to 88 today!  Great running weather!  Ran 6 miles this morning!  First time since the 10k in May!  Going to try and run the 1/2 marathon on 10/10 in Wichita.  Learned a few things in Tampa last week.  First, there IS a vegetarian version of the plan at Medi-Weightloss Clinics!  I also learned that when you figure net carbs, if there are more than 10g of suger alcohols, you only subtract half from the total carbs.  My weight was up a couple more pounds this morning due to water.  My muscle mass has increased so that might explain some of the water.  Looking into getting the loose skin on my chest removed.  My blood work came back and my HDL (good cholesterol) was 97!  THAT is awesome!
There is a very informative blog out there that I would like to share with everyone!  http://www.formerfatguy.com/ has lots of good information and is easy to navigate!  Take a second to look over his site!  I am sure you will find it very interesting!  He, too, lost 300 pounds of fat and added 80 pounds of muscle!  WTG!
In class learning more about the system that worked for me!  Tampa is really wet right now and temperatures in the 80′s.  Wow, I just found out that the plan can be formulated for vegetarians!  I have also learned about a new program they are working on for kids called PowerPlay.  Stay tuned for more info!  My fellow students here are the good folks from the soon to be open Overland Park, Ks Medi-Weightloss Clinics!  They are opening their clinic this Wednesday!  If your in the area and want to check them out, call 913-284-0459!
I also want to pass on a link to a fellow Medi-Weightloss Clinics success story in a beautiful young lady, Denise Cook.  Take a second to look over her latest post.  It is a great read!  http://mymediweightlossjourney.wordpress.com/2010/08/24/the-medi-miracle/

Well, another week in the books and I’m up just a bit to 203.  Gotta re-adjust a bit!  I haven’t been running much so ran 3 miles this morning! Those of you that are thinking about adding jogging to your exercise routine, here is a very interesting link of tips for beginners!  http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/beginners.html
Also, tune in Friday, September 3rd to listen to Jimmy Moore’s Liven-La-Vida-Low-Carb podcast!  I had a blast talking to him!  http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/shownotes/2010/june-2010-january-2011-llvlc-show-podcast-interview-schedule/

A very interesting article from the Washington Post about weight loss!
Who is this person?  A pic sent to me today!
“When you see what you’re here for, the world begins to mirror your purpose in a magical way. It’s almost as if you suddenly find yourself on a stage in a play that was written expressly for you.”
– Betty Sue Flowers
Great story this week. A son of a patient (4th grader) was in with his Mom (the patient) and his step sister (also a 4th grader) and they were both very helpful to their mom. The son was apparently talking about my picture in this quarte…rs magazine when I walked into the waiting room. The person working the front desk told the boy that if he turned around, he would get to meet the guy in the picture! When he turned around, he was in awe! : ) We spoke for a while and then they left. I went back to prepare to meet a patient I had an appointment with and here he came back with a nurse in tow. He wanted an autograph from me! Needless to say, I gave him two and shook his hand and told him I was glad to have met him and to keep up with the good help he was giving his Mom!
When people answer me with “thanks” or “You helped me a lot” or “your were my inspiration” and I feel like I have motivated/inspired someone in a special way…that is when I feel my best.

When do you feel at your best?

Still maintaining my weight at 193 (300 pounds lost!). I’ve started running again.  Going to try and do the 1/2 marathon in October!  During the next few weeks, I will begin to update and improve this website so stay tuned to the new and improved version!  One question that tends to come up fairly regularly is, “How much should I be losing each week?” Well, here is a very informative article that addresses that question!  http://weightlossforall.com/fat-loss-max-week.htm
Back in town after spending 6 days in Halifax, Nova Scotia!  I was crowned the International King for the TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) organization, a weight loss support group.  Here are a few pics!
Getting ready to fly out tomorrow morning to Halifax, Nova Scotia to be recognized Internationally by TOPS for my weightloss!  Will post an update or two while I am there!  Stay tuned for that big news I promised you….hopefully something this week!
Still keeping my weight in the 193-197 range!  I am weight lifting 3x a week, spinning 4 – 6 x per week, and jogging 3-5 miles 2 or 3 times a week.  Still following the Medi lifestyle (low carb).  Here is a link to some fine low carb recipes! http://www.dlife.com/diabetes/diabetic-recipes/?s_kwcid=TC%257c3015%257cbest%252520low%252520carb%252520recipes%257c%257cS%257cb%257c2671891133&gclid=CMXO-e_626ICFVJH5wodhBf2-A

I’m tellin you what!  MediWeightloss Clinics IS the one that works!  I still look in the mirror and am amazed at what is now looking back at me!  Check them out if you need help!
Woke up this morning disappointed, but after a 9am call, I’m excited.  Stay tuned!
How important is sleep to your weight loss? Here is an article I found on WEBMD that I found very interesting!
Welcome to JUNE!  It is hot out there!  Getting ready to run in a 8k race on the 19th!  Scales are not moving which is a good thing AND a bad thing lol! Still waiting to hear some big news!  Hope to start a new chapter in my life!  Ever wonder what electrolytes are? http://health.howstuffworks.com/question565.htm
Had a great weekend!  In fact, I was at a family get together when a friend, who I haven’t seen in almost a year came in.  She was there for about 30 minutes before someone called me by name and she looked and went “I’m SO sorry!  I didn’t know that was you!” SWEET!  LOL!  I love when that happens! : )
Let me SHOUT from the highest mountain top! “I DID IT!” My weigh in this morning at Medi showed me at 193 pounds! That means I have reached my 300 pounds LOST goal!
WOOT!!!! WOO HOO!!!! AWESOME!!! I DID IT!!!! SWEET!!!!!!
I FINALLY broke through!  I’m in “ONE”derland!  199.75 pounds!  Next goal, 193 (6.75 pounds) ALSO KNOWN AS 300 POUNDS LOST!  I have been following the Medi Challenge plan since Monday and as I promised, although a day late, here is what it is!  It is VERY simple!  I have a meal every 2 – 3 hours most of which are protein shakes (I do Muscle Milk Light and one Isopure zero carb daily).  You can replace 3-4 of the shakes with the medi bars if you so choose.  Two of the meals can be lettuce or baby spinach leaves.  Continue to drink 90-120 oz’s of water and take your suppliments.  It seems to be working for me!  Follow the plan for two weeks to jump start your weightloss if you plateau! Medi in the news again!
Hello all!  Back at it!  Had a wonderful time in Tampa/St Pete this weekend!  Had a great photo shoot Friday morning!  Got to meet Susie and her husband (fellow Medi-Weightloss Clinics successes!) Saturday after spending the day at Universal Studios Orlando!  Walked the beach at Ft. Desoto and watched the Dolphins play.  The Tradewinds Resort was top notch! Got up this morning and got my weights and a spin class in!  Going to do another spin class tonight and try to get in the morning class but I have to work overnight so we will see!  Tomorrow I will give you the low down on the Medi Challenge and I will post some pics Wednesday or Thursday!  Have a great day!
Ok, just another short note before I leave for Tampa!  Here is another Medi-Weightloss blogger who is having success in her journey that you will find helpful!  http://aweightylife.blogspot.com/ Went in this morning to my Medi-Weightloss Clinic to do some investigation as to why I can’t seem to break into my “One”derland.  My water weight was up a bit and my doc says she thinks it is a result from a number of things.  1) Travel: eating out and not having total control over what is going into my body, less exercise, and not getting all of my fluids in! And 2) Lack of rest/more stress) Running around to meet schedules, catch planes, unfamiliar surroundings, etc!  The sum of all this is my body is holding onto water so after I get back from Tampa this Sunday I will begin a little program that Dr. Cobb gave me called the Medi Challenge.  I will post the details of this on here next Tuesday morning so tune in then!  Monday I will tell you how my Tampa trip went!  HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
Feeling much better today!  Did my weight routine and spin class this morning.  Scales are “floating” between 203 and 200.  Can’t seem to break into “One”derland!  Thanks to all the new visitors to my blog!  Send me a note to let me know what you think and what I can do to make the site better!  I will be traveling to Tampa and will get back home Sunday evening.  I will post a big update next Monday!  See you then!
Just ran my first 10k since 1985 (25 years)! 16 months ago I couldn’t have walked a block! Today I ran 6.2 miles in 1:02:??! I actually didn’t cross the start line until 62 seconds after the starter pistol went off AND at 5 miles my hammy tightened up on me! I was pacing mile 1 = 8:52, 2 = 18:21, 3 = 28:12, 4 = 38:…4…2, 5 = 49:01 so I was really hoping to be under an hour but it didn’t happen. BUT I did beat my original plan of 11 minute miles so I’m happy!
While the Today Show was an awesome experience and everyone there was extemely nice to me, I am a little disappointed in the fact they chose to focus on the artificial sweetners instead of the real reason I lost the weight.  I understand they didn’t want this to be a commercial for any business and wanted to remain focused on individual achievements, but the key for me was the doctor monitored, low carb diet at Medi Weightloss Clinics! As I do more of these things, I’m learning that I MUST turn these conversations around and focus them back on the real issues and fixes!  I know that some of the main stream media (Dr. Oz for one) is beginning to “get it” but most still lag behind the times. I wish I would have had this revelation yesterday and I would have mentioned this in my local NBC follow-up interview at Noon (see link below).  While Dr. Cobb and I had the opportunity on a local cable show to explain how the Medi Weightloss plan works (also in the link), I must continue to be the voice in the wilderness leading people to “The one that works”!
If you want to try out the WOL I’m following, find a local MediWeightloss Clinic closest to you and let them know I sent you and you will get a discount on your first visit!!  http://www.mediweightlossclinics.com/locations/

  4. Jerome, you are amazing. I read your article on the Joy Fit club just a bit ago. Wow…I said, sound like me. I am almost at my top weight again and I feel miserable. Always tired and my body aches. Had to give up caring for kids in our church nursery cause I can’t keep up with my babies. Embarrassed when I take my daughter to college & the other student look at me.I can’t do this any longer. I need help, would you please tell me about Medi. Where do I start? Thanks for your time.

245 pounds down!  Updated photo!
Here is one of my newer Photos!
I can now fit into 42′s.  40′s fit too but just a little too tight! I am now down to 259 pounds!
Hello world! I have made a lifestyle change! December 21st, 2008 I went to my doctors    office to weigh and I tipped the scales at 493 pounds!

I went to work immediately! Cut my calories to 1200 per day and began logging everything I put in my mouth. I started hitting the gym. The first few weeks I rode the exercise bike for 15 minutes, 3 times a week. I recommitted to TOPS Club Inc. – (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) on Tuesday nights with a club in Valley Center #0414. TOPS is a weight loss support group that can be found just about anywhere in the US and Canada. By January 6th, 2009 I was down to 478. I came up with a slogan for our group that I follow on a daily basis. NMX – No More Excuses! We had some t-shirts made up with this logo on the front that turned out very cool looking. During this time I had been impressed with the weight loss of a member (the leader) of our TOPS Club (30+ pounds in a little over 3 months). She had been going to a Medi-Weightloss Center and loved it so I decided to give it a try! The soonest I could get in for an appointment was the 23rd of January but I went ahead and began their diet based upon her description of it. I also upped my exercise to 20 minutes, then 25, and then soon afterwards 30 minutes 3 times a week. I also began to circuit train in weights 3 times per week. By the time my first appointment came around for Medi-Weight loss, I weighed in at 454 pounds. As part of the first appointment you undergo a full physical, blood work, and EKG. Everything came back looking very good. I have been very lucky at the age of 45, (now 46), not to have diabetes but I did have a small issue with blood pressure. I was put on a 1000 – 1200 calorie diet and was instructed to keep my carbs below 25 grams per day. At this point I also began a daily regiment of taking suppliments. During a 24 hour period I take a multivitamin, calcium, 3 Omega 3 oil pills, 3 fat burner pills, 2 Stay Slim pills, and a water/blood pressure pill. I also began doing cardio 5 times a week and weights 3 times per week. Yes, I had high blood pressure and sleep apnea.  I no longer use the machine or take the meds!
Just before Medi Appt.Just before Medi Appt.

By March 20th I was down to 415 pounds. At this point, I added walking to my routine. Early on I started at 1 mile 3 times a week at a brisk 4mph. I am now doing 2 miles, 3 times per week. This past Friday, April the 24th, I weighed in at 389 pounds and have lost 15 inches off my waist! THAT IS 104 POUNDS LOST IN 127 DAYS! This past weekend, I attended the TOPS Club SRD (State Recognition Days) in Topeka, Ks and was awarded 1st place in weight loss for men in Kansas! Woo Hoo! My doctor has set a goal for me at 230 pounds but I would like to see myself in the 190 – 200 range which will be a 300 pound total loss! I am a third of the way there! As I reflected on the accomplishment thus far, I thought I might help inspire other people towards taking charge over their weight issues! I plan on becoming a personal trainer when I get closer to goal. This is the first time I have delved into doing anything on the web so let’s see what I can do!

Through this process I also found a wonderful group of people who provided an excellent source of support on a Medi-Weight  Loss board.  The one thing I have found is you can never have enough support in this quest to become healthy! : )

First half marathon….ouch, ugh, ow….first 6 miles in 66 minutes, then knee started hurting, calf and hammy tightened to the point I could barely walk at 11 miles, stopped, stretched for 15 minutes, walked, finally was able to finish on my 11 minute pace but overall it took me 2:57. I guess, not bad for my first one but I’m beginning to wonder if I’m more of a short race runner… ; )

WOW!  Still sore from running my first 10K Race since 1985!  My official time was (and you can say it was easy as) 01:02:03! : ) Did my weights Sunday morning and a spin class and steamed this morning.  Plan on hitting another spin class tonight!  I think my scale is broken!  It doesn’t want to go below 200! : (  Oh well…gotta keep doin what I’m doin!
heading out for 10k run in Wichita!  It’s 41 degrees out with a NW wind 10-15mph.  WooHoo!
Got my weights and a good spin class in last night!  Going to relax today before my big 10k run tomorrow morning!  Scales are fluctuating between 202 and 200.  having a hard time breaking into “One”derland!
Time to get back to training!  Going to try a 10k run this Saturday at the Wichita Riverfest.  Now, on to my Wednesday evening spin class!  WOOT!

Taped a promo for the local NBC affiliate promoting the May 3rd Today Show appearance!  It was fun!  got 2 spin classes in yesterday and weights and a spin class in this morning!  Making up time since I only worked out 1 time (ran 5 miles in 55 minutes on Friday) last Thursday through Sunday!

What a grand weekend!  Got a 5 mile run in, spent some time on an exclusive golf course, and meet the best bunch of people around!  Now to get ready for New York City next weekend! Oh yeah, and also got another 5 mile run in!

Ran 5 miles in 55 minutes Friday!  Got my weights and a 2 hour spin class in this morning!  Was crowned TOPS Kansas King for my weight loss and won several other awards at the TOPS State Recognition Days this weekend!  Here are a few pics!

Worked out with the team black last night!  WHEW!  Weights and spin this morning and going to do 5 miles today sometime.  Watch out red team…I’ll be there in the morning!

Ran 4 miles today in 43:47! Followed by the new spin class! I think I’m ready for the weekend! Plan on doing weights and 2 hours of spin tomorrow!

Down 6 more pounds to 203!  4 pounds to ONE-derland and 10 pounds to 300 lost! Saturdays 2 mile race went very well!  Ran the first mile in 7:48…freaked and slowed down to make sure I made it and finished in 19:51!  This morning upped to 3 miles at an 11:30 per mile pace.  SWEET!

Down 4 more pounds to 209.  This is the lowest I have been since High School!  9.25 pounds to ONE-derland and 16 pounds to 300 lost! Went ahead and signed up for Saturdays 2 mile run and have done it twice (once on an indoor track and once outdoors) averaging a little over 11 minutes a mile.  Not bad since I just started running again about 8 days ago!

Scales are telling me 213 this morning after running a 10 minute mile, walking another and doing a 2 hour spin class yesterday.  This morning I got up and walked 2 miles.  Weights and an hour spin class in the am tomorrow.  May try to get another short run in today.  Thinking about running a 2 mile race Saturday!  It just feels great to be back into the swing of things!

WOOT! Weighed in today at 215…278 pounds lighter! Fat% is 15.4% or 33 pounds and my BMI is 30! Waist measures in at 34″ ! I’m also getting a string of exercising in without any problems!

Happy Birthday to me!  Feel like i’m 27 instead of the 47 I really am!  Amazing what nearly a 300 pound loss does for you!  Celebrated with a spin class this morning!  WOOT!

Walked a mile, did an hour spin class and some weights today!  Still fighting some kind of infection but gonna try and work through it!  Looking forward to seeing Doc P tomorrow!

Had a wonderful time working out with the black and red teams last nite and this morning!  Feeling a lil sore…but it is a good sore!  Looking forward to spin and weights in the morning!

On Wednesday I walked 2 miles and jogged a half mile!  Got an hour spin class, walked 2 more miles, and weights done now!  Looking forward to working out with our Biggest Loser contestants tonite and tomorrow morning!

Doc released me to moderate exercise!  WOOT!  I did weights and a spin class this morning!  IT FEELS GOOD!!  Today anyway

I WON!  WOOHOO!  Thanks everyone!  Did a light spin class Thursday night, and walked 2 miles Friday and Saturday!  Doc took some fluid out of my abs Friday and now I hafta go back next Wednesday.  If everything checks out then, I will be released to full duty!  WOOT!

3/01 / 2010;

Just kind of rocking between 220 and 218!  Going to see the doc today and get my tube out!  Exercise should soon follow!  WOOT!  Thanks to all that are supporting me in my bid to become Medi-Weightloss’s first cover model!  If you haven’t had a chance to vote or pass it on too your friends, here is he link!

2/24 / 2010;

Weighed in at TOPS at 218!  My %body fat is 17.8 and my waist is 36.5″ (down from 67″)!  WOOHOO!  Thanks to all that are supporting me in my bid to become Medi-Weightloss’s first cover model!  If you haven’t had a chance to vote or pass it on too your friends, here is he link!

2/19 / 2010;

In a tough race for the Medi-Weightloss cover model contest.  The main competition is a Tri-Delta senior that attends UCF who is from New York and has 650+ facebook friends vs my 160+ facebook friends.  Anything everyone can do to assist me in realizing this dream, it would be much appreciated!  Scales showing 221 now!  Still a little sore!  Can’t wait to get healed and get back to working out!  HAPPY FRIDAY!

2/16 / 2010;

Felt kinda cruddy Sunday night through 1 am this morning but my 101.5 temp broke and feeling much better this morning!  Doc told me to slow down a bit and not to walk more that a mile  a day until my tube is out.  Oh, well….

2 /14 / 2010;

Pumped it up to 3 miles this morning! Took me 49 minutes to walk it so about a 3.5ish mph pace. Not bad! Scales said 223 this morning……270 pounds gone! I look in the mirror and feel good about how I look but I still look heavy in my photos. What’s up with that?

2/13 / 2010;

Hitting my slow stride!  2 miles again this morning at a fairly quick pace.  Looking to attend a few spin classes next week (yes, will go slow!).  Scales down 2 pounds this morning (226).  When doc looked at my belly button Wednesday, he was concerned I may lose it.  It looks a lot better today!  We will see what he says Monday.

Managed to walk 2 miles yesterday!  Feeling pretty good this morning!  ready to get back on the bike and do some light pedaling.  Hope to begin jogging and weights in a few weeks!  My 10pm news piece turned out well!  Here it is…

Off pain meds!  Doc gave the ok to be able to drive!  Stitches out!  Walked a mile this morning!  Slowly getting the show back on the road!

Here is a blog of a fellow Medi weightloss  follower you might find interesting!  http://aweightylife.blogspot.com/

1 pill every 4 hours now!  seem to be doing ok!

day 2…..taking 1 pain pill every 3 hours……hurry up and heal!

Everything went well yesterday! In fact, they found another small hernia and fixed it too! No complications and seem to be on the fast track to recovery! Woo Hoo! AND the meds aren’t bad either!   They took 12 pounds of skin!

Day of tummy tuck surgery! Excited, apprehensive, but ready to get this overwith!  Off we go!

Well, things are really clicking lately!  If you want to listen to my radio interview live, it will air this Sunday at 6pm central time on WJR http://www.wjr.com/article.asp?id=142275  and they will, at some point, add it too their archive so you can listen too it any time.  The days are clicking away until the tummy tuck happens next Wednesday!  AND on Tuesday, I will be in the Wichita Eagle and I’m being interviewed by the Ark Valley News!  Still hitting it hard!  My last class I will take will be Monday morning spin at west 13th Genesis preceded by my weight routine.  Then total rest and hydration mode hits to get ready for Wednesday!

Well, with the added workload, I am just maintaining my 231 pounds.  It looks like my exercise will stop on Monday the 25th.  I am resting on Tuesday and making sure I am hydrated and the body is ready for this change!  The new spin music is awesome!  A mix of old and new and it is very challenging!  If you want to try it, attend a group ride session at any Genesis Health Club!  Starting to become a little more excited and apprehensive as the Tummy Tuck / Hernia Repair day closes in on me.

My interview went well with WJR-760 in Detroit!  It will air 1/24 at 7pm and it can be tuned in on the internet.  The Wichita Eagle also did a story on me and it is scheduled to run on Tuesday, 1/26 in the Wichita Talks section.  My surgery is scheduled for 9:30am Wednesday 1/27.  They are going to fix a hernia during the tummy tuck. Looks like I will be down for 2-3 weeks.

Hitting a lot of spin classes in this last drive for weight loss.  Took a spin class everyday last week and two on Sunday!  Planning the same deal this week and next!  I’m not looking forward too the lay-off after surgery!  16 days till transformation time!  Would like to be in the 220-225 range on the day of surgery.

I hope everyone is doing well with your healthy goals!  I have been hitting it hard in a last minute drive to lose as much as possible before my tummy tuck on the 27th.  I am going to see a docter about possibly having a hernia fixed at the same time I am having the tummy tuck.  Holidays went well for me!  I have lost 13.5 pounds in the last month!

OK, New goal is 193.   43 pounds to 300 lost!  38 inch waist!  Awards and interviews beginning to flow in!  It is so exciting!   I just love sharing my story with everyone!  Thanks for your support!

Back to work!  Hitting it hard in the gym and at work getting ready for my 2-3 week lay-off from tummy tuck surgery.  It’s going to be a COLD week here in Kansas!  I’m ready for spring!

New goals for 2010….

1) Lose 38.25 pounds to find one-derland!
2) Lose 45 pounds to reach the 300 pounds lost milestone!
3) Run 10k race in May.
4) Run half marathon in October.
5) Tummy Tuck surgery.

Good Morning everyone!  Hope you have had a wonderful Holiday season so far and may you have a Happy New Year!  Weighed in last night and I made it into the 230’s!   238…..That mean’s I have lost 240 pounds in 2009 and a total weight loss of 255 pounds!  I am making one final push towards weight loss to try and get as low as I can before the tummy tuck (1/27).  Would like to be in the 230-235 range at the time of the surgery but we will see.  I continue to run into people I know but haven’t seen in over a year and they simply don’t recognize me anymore!   I have to introduce myself….so cool!

Oh yeah….and a funny! I was taking a shower this weekend and I noticed my breast bone, for the first time in a long time, sticking out a bit! I was a little worried at first before my wife reminded me that it was just my breast bone! This after two weeks ago when I was rubbing my neck and felt a lump on my throat and she reminded me that I too have an adam’s apple!

Well…I decided to pull the trigger! going to see the doc on Monday and am looking at January 27th as the tummy tuck day!  I just feel like I have to finish the job!

Ran 4 miles for the first time!  Followed that with an hour spin class (Monday), then got up Tuesday morning, did weights and another spin class!  Legs are talking to me today! Looking forward to spin class tonight!  Weigh-in has me at 244.25!  Sound familiar?  Yea, sounds like my last update huh!?  : )

Ran 3 miles for the first time!  Followed that with an hour spin class (Monday), then got up Tuesday morning, did weights and another spin class!  Legs are talking to me today! Looking forward to spin class tonight!  Weigh-in has me at 245.5!  BUT let me tell you…..it’s COLD out  side!  10 degrees!  Hope it’s a little warmer at the Frrrrrosty 5k!

It is official!  I weigh 246.5 pounds, exactly 246.5 pounds lighter then this time last year!  I have a 39.5″ waist and my fat% is 24% (normal male range = 11 to 22%!

Updated Photos!

493/248/250:  Well, I am 49 weeks into my journey and have lost 245 pounds!  I can fit into size 40 pants and XL shirts!  It still blows my mind!  I guess it doesn’t impress some folks as much as it does me due to the fact that I still look “chubby”.  I can’t wait for the tummy tuck to happen as that is where the “chubby” is located.   Although, now I’m worried about the cost factor of it since it looks like my insurance and flex accounts will not pay for “cosmetic” surgery that will cost about $20,000.  $6500 for tummy, $3500 for each upper thigh, $2000 for each arm and $2500 for each side of the chest (breast reduction).  It is just crazy that insurance wouldn’t cover this.  How much am I saving them by getting healthy?  Anyway, here is a link to my cable show you might enjoy

Feeling pretty good now!  Back on track!  Did bike class Saturday and Sunday morning and did weights and ran a mile Sunday morning!

Back on track!  After dealing with my sister-in-laws and my wife’s grandfather’s deaths and the travel / meals / lack of exercise that went with that since Saturday, I’m feeling kinda sluggish!  Going to do the long bike class in the morning and eat lightly all day!  Gotta get back into the groove!

Up and down day today!  Ran the 2 mile turkey trot this morning in memory of my sister-in-law, then went to her funeral, then took some awards photos for my weight loss, now planning trip to Illinois for wife’s grandfather’s funeral on Tuesday!

I ran 2 miles for the first time on the 12th of November. Have been doing it in the 23:30’s range.  Today’s time 21:38!

Back into it!  Walked a mile and stretched then did an hour spin class this morning, then walked a half mile and then ran 2 miles in 22:32 followed by another spin class tonight.  Feeling pretty good!  Will take it fairly easy the next couple of days so I’m ready for Saturday’s Turkey Trot.  I will be running this race in memory of Teresa Lupo…RIP

Only lost a quarter pound this week…but hey!  It’s still a loss!

Lost  my wife’s sister last night.  One of the last things I heard her say was to my wife last Saturday.  She was excited about losing 42+ pounds in the last 3 months and wanted to do something for me since I had inspired her to start losing her excess weight.  Being in her early 40’s, she was far to young to leave!  We will miss her!

I celebrated my success by jogging 2 miles for the first time in 23 years!  I have decided to train for the Riverfest 10K run next May and use that as a stepping stone for the Prairie Fire Marathon (I will just do the half marathon).  Depending on how that goes…I may try the full marathon in 2011!  Looks like I may have some national TV exposure!  We are in the wait and see mode on that!

Worked my behind off!  AND  I DID IT!!!!  My initial goal of 250 reached!   My next goal…246.5!  I will be half the man I used to be at that point!  WOW….blowing me away!

I just love speaking to individuals and groups about my success and what it took for me to get where I am at!  My son even gives me a hard time!  He works at the Wal-Mart branch that I do our family shopping at as a Teller for Fidelity Bank.  Just yesterday he asked me if I knew half the people he sees me chatting with at the store.  I laughed and said no but they seem to like to hear my story and usually want to know more!

Went to Wal-Mart this afternoon….bought a pair of pants and took them home to try them on!  The size 42’s fit!  Woo Hoo! Outstanding!

: D  Moment of realization!  I looked down and saw my toes! LOL!

Awesome TOPS weigh-in!  Less than 10 pounds to go!  Power class this morning kicked my behind!  Ready for group ride!

Wasn’t too bad of a weekend!  Went a little over on calories but they were all “good calories”.  No cheating! Did the 2 hour group ride on Sunday!  Fun Times!  The scales at Medi show me at 261!  I post my home health scales on this site though.

How about 15 pounds to go!?  Another good loss!  I have been keeping my food journal consistantly this week and here is my exercise routine as it stands today.

Monday: Walk 2 miles, run 1 mile, Group Power 1 hour

Tuesday: Walk 1 mile, Weights, Group Ride 1 hour

Wednesday: Walk 2 miles, run 1 mile, Group Power 1 hour, Group Ride 1 hour

Thursday: Walk 1 mile, Weights, jog 1 mile

Friday:  Walk 2 miles, run 1 mile

Saturday: Walk 1 mile, Weights, Goup Ride 1 hour

Sunday: DAY OF REST but sometimes Group Ride 1 hour and sometimes 2 hours

Had a wonderful time at the TOPS Funday!  I recieved numerous awards and was given a chance to tell my story.  I was also asked to visit several chapters!  Sunday I did 2 – 1 hour spin classes….whew!  19 pounds to go!

The show that KSN produced about my weight loss turned out pretty good!  It aired Monday and Tuesday night at 8pm!  Primetime!  It was fun to be a part of it!  Still losing and it looks pretty good right now that I will make goal by the end of the year!  Woo Hoo!

I love just watching it fall off!  20.5 pounds to go!  222.5 lost!  Got my spin class in, walked a mile, and did a little steamroom action.  Now off to surprise my grandfather for his birthday!

Slept in a bit this morning and missed my spin class!  went ahead and did weights and jogged a mile in 11:13 and walked another in 14:35.  Will hit the spin class Sunday morning!  Maybe even do part of the second one but can’t stay for it all as I am taking my grandfather out for his birthday / getting him out of his house so the rest of the family can set up for a surprise party for him.  Nice and quiet in the house!  The boys and my wife are in Illinois with her grandfather who is doing poorly.  I am playing the part of a bachelor this weekend!

Taping went well last night!  Poor C!  (instructor) only got a 30 minute heads-up that we were taping!  SURPRISE!  Kinda bummed right now.  Had my visit with the tummy tuck surgeon.  Can’t get it all done in one sitting (tummy, boob job..lol, arms, and upper legs.  He recommended doing the belly first BUT when that is done, I can’t exercise for 4-6 weeks!  I JUST GOT USED TO JOGGING!  If I take that much time off, I will lose a lot of what I have gained so far!  I don’t know.  Maybe I will wait till about this time next year to do it so i will be healed and ready to start re-training in January.  What do yall think?

Have jogged a mile every day this week so far!  Going to be taped exercising tomorrow night doing C’s spin class for a show being produced next Monday about my weight loss!

Feeling pretty good this morning!  The last two days I have jogged a full mile and walked another 1.5 miles each day.  I’m doing that mile in just under 12 minutes!  Here is another picture to show how much I have lost!

Jerome 1 10-8-09

2 more pounds!  Ran 5:35 half miles 3x this morning!  Check out the picture below!  Last Christmas, I nearly filled this over sized chair!

Well, as they used to say..”I’ve come a long way baby!”.  This morning I weighed in at 277 pounds.  That’s 216 pounds lost forever!  201 of that since 1/6/09!  This morning I jogged a half mile…..three times!  On a 12 lap mile track, I started with 6 laps walking.  Then jogged 6 laps in 6:32, then walked 3 laps. The next 6 laps I jogged in 6:02, then walked 3 more laps.  The last 6 laps I did in 5:33 followed by 6 laps walking for a total of 3 miles.  Awesome! Will do this for a week then pump it up to .75 miles 3X.

It just amazes me every time I think about where I am!  I walked my youngest son (who is a senior this year and was nominated for Homecoming King) out onto the football field last Thursday and was comfortable doing it!  Not long ago I would have avoided this kind of situation because I was embarrassed of my appearance and I didn’t want to embarrass my son.  Even at family outings I wouldn’t socialize much because I was ashamed of myself.  This new found confidence in myself is wonderful!  WOW!  As I’m typing this I am getting ready for work and guess what!  I just slid into a pair of size 46 jeans!  AND they are a little loose!  Ten months ago, I was in size  66 stretch pants with a waist size of 72!

WooHoo!  Scales keep moving down! Need to continue on a 2.6 pound loss per week to reach goal by the end of the year!  What a week!  Started with my interview then I won our works Biggest Loser contest for the 3rd consecutive quarter!  This morning I upped my jogging! I started with walking 3 laps then jog 3 laps, walked a lap, jogged another 3 laps – 5 times then walked 13 laps.  It is 12 laps for a mile so I jogged a quarter mile!  I did this five times so overall I jogged 1.25 miles!  WOW!  I also walked 1.75 miles!  SWEET!

I think training on the track is easier for me right now.  Having set targets seems to make it easier.  It takes 12 laps to equal a mile so this am I walked 6, then for the next mile (12 laps) I jogged 2, walked 1.  Then finished off with walking 6 more.  Took me 13 minutes to do that jogging mile.

Thanks for all the kind comments and support!  Stepped on the scales this morning and it shows another pound lost!

493/284/250          34 to go!  I am trying to start jogging but #1) the loose skin flapping and popping is very annoying and embarrassing, and #2) even when I try it at 4am, I can only go two blocks before walking.  I will keep trying though as jogging is a very good weight loss exercise!  Man!  I am really looking forward to getting rid of some of this skin!  What a pain!

Did my interview! Whew!

493/286/250: And the pounds keep slipping off!  36 pounds to go!  Did a lot of walking on Saturday at the Valley Center Fall Festival.  Man!  I don’t remember jogging being this hard!  I can go about 2 blocks then walk 1 or 2 houses, then run another 1 or 2 blocks.  I end up doing a mile in about 12-13 minutes.  Not the fastest but hey, it’s a start! : )

493/288/250:  Holy Cow!   38 pounds to goal!  Man, It’s almost surreal!  I can remember thinking about the mountain I had to climb to lose 243 pounds and wondering if I would ever get there!  Now, not only do I see the light at the end of the tunnel, but I see the finish line!  I really think I will be able to reach goal by the end of the year!  I  had a good meeting with the TOPS Chapter at Genesis!  Thanks for having me!  Then, the TOPS chapter that I attend threw me a party for losing 200+ pounds!  They got me a t-shirt that has “BIG LOSER” on the front of it and on the back it has “The only person that can stop me, is me and I can take him! 200 pounds lost!”  Thanks guys!  It looks like the interview will come to fruition this next Tuesday at Noon on KSN.  They are also thinking about using me on another story for the 6p and 10p news.  Things just seem to be coming around quickly and I love it!  I want everyone to fill this energy you get when you have the weight lifted off of you!  It feels great!

Had a very good weekend!  Pushed myself a bit with walking 8 miles, weightlifting, and an hour spin class.  Looked at myself in the mirror and still see a fat man looking back.  Can’t wait to get this last 40 pounds off and get that tummy tuck done!  Looking forward to sharing my story with a TOPS chapter at Genesis Health Club this morning!  493/291/250

TOPS weigh-in had me at 292 last night!  201 pounds lost!  WOOHOO!  Rock-n-roll!  Next goal is 274 pounds or 18 pounds to lose!  WOW, I AM getting close!  Lets…”Git-er-done!”

Well folks!  What an exciting weekend!  I was asked to speak at the annual TOPS walk where I shared my success story.  I then proceeded to finish first in the 5k walk!   I have been asked to speak at several chapters AND it sounds like I will be on the local news either today or tomorrow!  I also weighed in this morning at 295 or just 2 pounds from 200 lost!  Holy Cow!  AND to top it off, I am wearing a pair of size 46 jeans this morning!

Another 2.5 pounds gone! Some cool numbers…..

1/23/2009 (First Medi appointment, already 39 pounds lost)

454lbs, 219 lbs fat, 48.7% fat, 63.7% bmi

297lbs, 90 lbs fat, 30.3% fat, 41.4% bmi

Gonna get there sooner or later!

Going to walk in the TOPS walk tomorrow morning and they have asked me to speak to kick off the event! Oh goody, goody! Public Speaking!

493/299.5/250  MARK IT FOLKS!!!!  I finally made the 2’s!!!  WOOHOO!

493/300.25/250  1.75 pounds since Tuesday!  Dude!  So close to the 2’s!  I’m so stoked!  Saturday morning I walked from work to my house.  It is 4.1 miles….felt great!  Had a funny happen this weekend too!  I was giving my youngest son (Jeremy a senior this year) a hard time saying “It seems like my boys are getting lazier!”  His comback was “No, your just becoming way more active!” LOL!

493/302/250  2 pounds since Friday!  It’s getting to be a broken record! LOL!  On January 6th, I weighed in at 478 pounds so when I lose another 24 pounds, I will have lost 200 pounds in 2009!  Getting ready to switch up the workout again by seeing Jeremy at Genesis and switching to a free weight routine.

493/304/250  2 pounds since Tuesday!  Gotta Love It!  WOO HOO!  4.25 pounds and I’m in the 2’s!  11 pounds and I have lost 200 pounds! 54 pounds to goal!  If I get to 302 by Tuesday then I will need to average 3 pounds a week to reach goal by 12/22 giving me a week leaway!

493/306/250  2 pounds since Friday!  Looks like it is picking back up!  WOO HOO!  6.25 pounds and I’m in the 2’s!  13 pounds and I have lost 200 pounds! 56 pounds to goal!

493/309/250  6 pounds!  I thought I was slowing down and started to look for reason’s why!  Two possibilities, first was the over training.  I slowed down and took one day off about a week and a half ago.  The second thing is sugar free gum.  I would chew a whole pack in a day and I wonder if all those sugar alcohol carbs (which are not supposed to effect you) slowed my weight loss?  We will see how it goes next week!  9.5 pounds and I’m in the 2’s!  16 pounds too 200 pounds lost!

493/314/250  Another 2 pounds gone forever!  Well, it looks like the modifications are working!  Attended Dr Cobbs class on the mechanics of weight loss!  Very interesting!

493/316/250  Another pound gone forever!  Medical tests came back, all is OK!  Really pumped right now!  I bought a $10 pair of jeans from Walmart……size 48’s…..AND THEY FIT!!  Just a little tight around the tummy but loose every where else!  Back before Christmas 08 I was in 66’s!  OMG  I’m doing it!  WOOHOO!!  Gonna change up my exercise routine a bit in preperation for the NFL Season.

SUNDAY:  DAY OF REST….err…arm chair quarterbacking! LOL!

MONDAY: Walk 2 miles, Spin/Core Class

TUESDAY: Weights, Group Ride

WEDNESDAY: Walk 2 miles, Spin Class

THURSDAY: Weights, 45 minutes exercise bike

FRIDAY: Walk 2 miles

SATURDAY: Weights, Spin Class

This gives me 1 light day and 1 day off, doing cardio 6 days a week and weights 3 days a week.

Went to the doctors office for some tests on my gallbladder and liver.  Just precautionary due to the amount of weight lost this year.  Oh, yeah….493/317/250!   It keeps coming off!

Walked 2 miles Monday am and a cardio n core class in the evening.  Then this morning was up at 4a to do my weight training and a spin class.  CRAZY!

493/319/250!  It was a busy weekend!  Walked 6 miles, weight lifted, and took a spin class along with helping my son buy a new car.  I’m ready for the week!  BRING IT ON!

Well, ended up not doing the group centergy class.  Ended up in a BOOTCAMP! Ouch!  But it felt good afterwards!  Now I know what you girls feel like when you have to run!  I need a body bra!

: D  I can’t wait to get this last 70 pounds off and get all of this loose skin taken off!  I ended up only running one lap due to all of the stares I got.  I understand though…I had a lot of stuff bouncing around in that run but it will not be there much longer.  All of the other laps the class ran, I performed a speed walk.

493/319.5/250!  A little better! Outta the 320’s and into the teen’s! : D  173.5 pounds lost!  Have gone to 3 spin classes since Saturday.  They are a blast!  I think I’m going to take another class called group centergy which is a combo of pilates and yoga.

493/323/250!   7 days, 2 pounds!  Ugh! I guess it’s time to punch it up a notch!  I believe I will try a spin class!  Wish me luck!

Well!  It went awesome!  Had a blast! (posted saturday night)  Did it again on Sunday! Woo Hoo!jb72009

493/325/250!   3 days, 3 pounds!  Sweet!  My heartrate this morning at the doc’s after I had walked 3 miles an hour earlier was 60!  Blood Pressure was 100/60 on the first check, checked it 10 minutes later and it was 110/70.

493/328/250!   Lost 3.5 pounds since Friday!  That totals 165 pounds lost!  150 pounds lost since January 6th, 2009.  27 consecutive weeks of losses averaging 5.56 pounds lost per week.  My doctor changed my goal weight to 250 pounds due to the amount of loose skin I will have to have surgically removed on my tummy and upper legs.   They are guessing that will amount to around 20 – 35 pounds of skin.  If I average 4 pounds a week, I will reach my goal on December 1st and if I average 3.25 pounds per week, I will still reach my goal by December 29th of this year!

493/331.5/230!   Lost 3 pounds since Tuesday!  That totals 161.5 pounds lost!  Called my family physician and asked them to check their charts to see when the last time I came in at this weight.  I began seeing them early 1990.  I have never been this light with them!  OK, so I’m just a lil pumped up now!

493/334.5/230!   Lost 2 pounds since Friday!  Pumped up the milage to 3.5 miles this morning!  It was the first walk since last Friday.  Played 18 holes of Golf on Saturday morning.  Sunday and Tuesday I did my 30 minutes on the stationary bike and 45 minutes weight lifting.  Had a wonderful 4th with the family and friends! Hope ya’ll did too!

493/336.5/230!   Lost 1 pound since Tuesday!  Walked 3 miles this morning, jogging 8 blocks.  Finally over that heartburn attack!  I will never have tomatos and cottage cheese again! LOL! Well, it’s another holiday weekend.  Planning on playing 18 holes of golf Saturday morning at 6am!  Should be a blast!  Have played twice this year at Echo Hills shooting a 102 the first time and a 101 the last time.  My wife got me a new set of Adams golf clubs for Fathers Day so it will be interesting to see if I do better this time!  Charlie Rose, my trainer at Genesis, has set me up on a good weight lifting plan and I’m feeling it a little this morning.  Thanks Charlie!

493/337.5/230!   Lost 2.5 pounds since Friday!  Walked 3 miles last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and jogged 4 blocks on Friday, 5 on Saturday, and 6 on Sunday.  Did a training session this morning with Charlie at Genesis.  Had a stomach issue last night for the first time in over 6 months.  A little sore yet this morning.

493/340/230!   Lost 1 pound since Tuesday!  Decided to do my 3 mile walk this morning.  Mixed in 4 blocks of light jogging.  Still feeling pretty good!  153 pounds gone!  I’m still pretty confident that I can get the last 110 pounds off by the end of the year.  If I average 4 pounds a week, I will get there!

493/341/230!   Lost 5 pounds since Friday!  WOO HOO!  Added a little, and I emphasize little, jogging to my walking routine (2 blocks of my 3 mile walk).  Saving my knees!  I would like to be able to switch gears to jogging 3 miles by the time I reach 300 pounds if my joints will allow it.

Good Morning everyone!  MAN! It’s getting hot in Kansas!  Looks like summer is here!  My weight loss is continuing on a hot pace too!  Another 3 pounds puts me at

493high/346now/230goal   147 pounds lost, 116 pounds to go!

Pulled out a pair of shorts (size 52) that still had tags on them and they are loose!  I may be able to get into 50’s now! WOO HOO!

It’s Tuesday night TOPS weigh-in!  Down to 349 pounds!  I am actually thinking about changing up my routine.  Maybe going to start weights 6 days a week and do back, abs,  and hammy’s 1 day and the other would be chest, arms, and quads.  Also thinking about adding some short jogging to the routine.  We will see.

I DID IT!  Had a blast walking with some co-workers at the Heart Walk on the Wichita State University campus.  It took 63 minutes to walk 3.2 miles.  I tell you what….there aren’t any hills in my neighborhood to speak of but there are some good ones on this campus!  But it was still good times and it was a very good cause to support too!  Looking forward to Tuesdays weigh-in.  IF I lose again ; ) it will mark 23 straight loses.  I’m going for 52!  Just got my 30 minutes cycling and 30 minutes weight lifting in so I’m REALLY pumped!  I think I will get together the WalMart list and do some more walking!   I’ll slow down tomorrow when I go get my 30 minutes cycling in then spend the rest of the day visiting my grandfather and going to see the play “The Producer’s”.  Man, I wish I could bottle this natural high feeling and sell it! lol!

Well, I weighed in today at Medi and the scales show another 4 pounds lost!

Start : 493

Now  : 350

Goal : 230

Looking forward to walking in the Heart Walk tomorrow at Wichita State University.  3.2 miles around the campus, walking with friends sounds like a blast!

1.5 pounds lost since Friday…expected more but I guess that’s ok!  Hammy a little sore this morning.  Gotta stretch a lot today.  Haven’t walked since Sunday when I went 4 miles.  Plan on doing 3-4 tonight if weather permits.  Anybody have any tips for my 3.2 walk on Saturday at the Heart Walk?  I usually walk early am or late evening but this will occur late morning.  I plan on having plenty of water with me and will stretch before we begin!

Weighed in at Medi-Weightloss Clinic today (they are a great bunch of folks!) and I’m down to 355.5 pounds!  That is 137.5 total pounds lost and 122.5 pounds of that is this year!  My new mini-goal is 343 pounds.  12.5 pounds to 150 pounds lost!  Well, I did something I hadn’t done in 20 years.  I jogged a block!  lol!   I did my 30 minutes on the bike early and when I got home I decided to try it! Now I know that was cool and probably could have done more but I am trying to protect my knees.  I plan on returning to jogging at some point (probably when I reach the 300-310 range.  I’m probably being over-cautious but I know that injury is the quickest way to derail a  plan.   Early on I had mentioned a friend of mine (Bonnie) who inspired me to join Medi-Weightloss due to her great weightloss success.  Well, CONGRATS!  She has reached her goal!  Man, she looks great!  She is now in the maintenance phase and loving life!  I hope to get there by the end of the year.

11 Pounds Lost!!!!  WOO! HOO!  Put’s me at 357.75!  I have lost 135.25 pounds since my heaviest weight and 115 pounds this year.  128 pounds to go to reach goal!  I am still pushing towards trying to reach goal by the end of the year.  Learned something over the weekend about walking.  When I walk, I use long strides and by the end of 2 or 3 miles I am really huffing and puffing and I know my heart rate is in the 140-150 range.  Well, I read that if you shorten your strides you can last longer even though it may take you a bit longer to get your miles in.  Well, I shortened my stride and WOW!  At the end of my 2.5 mile walk I felt like I could keep going!   My heart rate was in the 120-130 range AND I did the walk in the same amount of time.  SWEET!

I knew I shouldn’t have had those beer broiled brauts, let alone 3 of them!  Still lost 1/2 pound this week but that puts a serious kink in my 5.8 loss average per week!  Gonna hit it hard this weekend and try to make up some lost ground!

Well, after a weekend of BBQ’s and family get together’s I stepped on the scales last night and lost .5 pound since last Friday.   I knew I shouldn’t have had those hot links Sunday and the beer broiled then grilled brauts on Monday did me in!  Well, I’m going to keep my fat and sodium count down for the rest of the week and we will see what happens Friday when I weigh in!  I have also discovered thast while almonds are good for you in limited numbers, I have a hard time keeping those numbers down.  Going to have to stay away from them for a while!

Even though I have had a bunch of curve balls thrown at me from work to a son locking his keys in his truck, with it running, I have still managed to continue my trek, or as I commonly refer to it, my marathon!  My nurse at Medi spoke to me this morning about starting to look at getting a tummy tuck.  If I choose to do this, it will not happen until I get into the 230 – 260 range.  I am currently at 364.5 so I have a little ways to go yet!  I figured this would be a $10,000+ job but it looks like it will be closer to $6,000.   God bless flex accounts! lol!

Down to 367.5!  6 more pounds to lose to reach the halfway point!  Gonna work hard to get that 6 pounds off this week so I will be able to say that I am halfway to goal 5 months into the year (20 weeks averaging 5.825 pounds per week).  That gives me 31 weeks to lose the next 131.5 pounds or 4.25 pounds per week.  Protein, protein, protein!  Water, water, water!  Just can’t emphasize how important these are to a diet!  Here are a couple of articles about them!

And here is a nice little thing that I drink after a workout that really seems to be helping me!

Hope this info helps everyone out!  See ya lighter soon!

Took a look at a picture of myself from May 14th and compared it to a similar one from January and started to get down on myself.

Just before Medi Appt.

Although I see a little change in the the face and neck, I see very little change in the mid-section.  This, after 5 months of intensive work-out and diet.  I then had to remind myself that it didn’t take me 5 months to pack all of this weight on!   This is my personal marathon and I am 10 pounds from halfway to my first goal of 230 pounds.  I lost 6 pounds this week to move me up to 122 pounds lost this year.  141 pounds to go!

Weighed in last Friday and I’m down to 377 pounds!  Pulled some more of my old clothes out this weekend and ended up wearing a pair of size 56 jeans to work Monday!  WOO HOO!   Christmas 2008, I was wearing size 6X stretch waist jeans which measures 64″.   I freaked out a bit on Saturday though!  I had worked out at the YMCA and it was a hard one (30 minutes cycling, 30 minutes circuit training).  Afterwards I went out to my car, turned it on and took a drink from my Smart Water bottle.  As I was drinking I glanced in the rear view mirror and did a double take!  I have a neck!  I can see details like tendons and swallowing motions!   It has been a long time since I have seen that! lol!  I have also commited to walking for the American Heart Association on June 13th.  That is a 3.2 mile walk at Wichita State University.  That should be fun as I’m walking with several co-workers who are very supportive of my weight loss.  Looking forward to tonights TOPS weigh in now!

The week started well!  TOPS weigh-in showed a 6.75 pound loss this week!  That puts me at 100.5 pounds lost this year and 112 total pounds!  Had a little bit of a let down yesterday though.  I thought I had been walking 2 miles the last few times I went walking and the timer said, based upon that distance, I was doing it at a 4mph rate.  Well, last night I drove the car through my route and it figured to be more like 1.65 miles or a 3mph rate.  Oh well, 3 months ago I wouldn’t have been able to do that.  I am averaging 5.85 pounds of weight loss per week this year.  If I average 4.9 for the rest of the year, I will reach goal on 12/29.  That is a lot!  I know that as I get closer to goal, it will get harder to lose so probably a better (back-up) goal is to be at goal by the next SRD in Kansas (April 16th & 17th, 2010).  I would need to average 3.3 pounds per week.  Much more doable!   BUT, I’m still going for the December one so, as possible State King (best loser) I will get to travel too Halifax, Nova Scotia in July of 2010 for the International Recognition Days for TOPS.

Riverfest begins tomorrow!  A lotta outside events and a lotta walkin!  My kind of event!

  1. I just came across your board when I was looking for a TOPS organization online.

I just started going to TOPS in January but our meetings and weigh-ins have been sporatic at best. I talked to the director of our district and ended up taking over leadership of our group. WOW that wasn’t expected.

Our first ‘under new management’ meeting will be Thursday. I’m hoping for five or six people.

I will continue to watch your journey!
    Thanks for the inspiration!

    • WOW! Good Luck! I, too, am a new leader of our group!

  2. Mr. Biggars,
I was introduced to a medi diet in mid June 2010. I started on July 5, 2010 at 430lbs. As of the present I have lost 115lbs and hve went from a size 58 pants, (should have been a size 60 ), I amd now wearing size 50.

    Yours Truly,

P.S. Forgot to mention that I’m 53 years old, going on 25.

    • LOL! Aren’t we all who have found success on this program! Congrats! I love to hear stories from folks like you that are getting their lives back! It encourages me to continue along my path to help others to find their weightloss and healthy successes!
